J. Schilling founded BAM in March, 2006 after seeing a need in the Hurricane, Utah, community for an animal welfare organization. Prior to that she had worked for over 25 years in child welfare in Oregon. J. bought her first dog for a penny, when she was 6 years old.
She owned a dog training business known as Pawsative Pet Training in Oregon for 5 years, and was an active member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. J began the first 4-H dog obedience club in Marion County, Oregon, in 1964.
Her own dogs have been shown in AKC, UKC, and Mixed Breed Obedience. She was also active in the Mutty Paws Dog Training Club, and was a member of the Willamette Agility Group.
Rita Longstreet loves family, animals and traveling. She lived in NJ until the past ten years. Utah is now home and she enjoys the beauty and open space of living in the west. Ever since childhood she has tried to help animals and is enjoying helping them as a member of BAM.
Andrea Wenzel was born and raised in Southern Minnesota, where she spent most of her time camping, playing on the lakes and volunteering at local animal shelters. In college, Andrea backpacked the Hawaiian Islands for 3 months studying ocean biology (the example on the left is a crab). When she finally received her BS in Environmental Sciences she loaded her dog and future husband up in an old Dodge Caravan and headed for Alaska, where she spent 9 months working with toddlers and backpacking through the Alaskan Mountains.
After getting married in Las Vegas, Nevada, Andrea and her husband moved to Toquerville, Utah. They spend all their free time with their three dogs and foster dogs, biking, skiing and camping. While Andrea is always looking for a new adventure, she will never stop caring for the animals that need her love. Her future aspirations are to build and operate her own dog shelter.
Fred Hawkes was born and raised in NJ and served 26 months in the US Army. He retired after 38 years with a welding and medical supply company based in NY and moved to Hurricane, Utah in 2001. He has enjoyed working with numbers and people his whole life.
Beth Lock is a co-founder of Special FX Lighting, Inc., and has worked with the company for the past 23 years. Currently Beth holds the title of President and manages the day to day activities of Special FX, which includes project management and quotations. She has been a member of the Board of Directors for her company since 1998.
Beth volunteers with BAM because she likes animals in general, and dogs in particular, much better than she likes most people.
Carola Farthing writes: "I was born in Helsinki, Finland, but lived mostly in the Middle East (I went to high school in Iran) until I came to the US to attend Stanford University. After graduating, my future plans were derailed by marriage.
"My family has always had dogs - and one very nervous Siamese cat which we had at the same time as we had seven dogs. The only time I have lived without dogs were my college years and I really missed not having one.
"I worked for many years at the Children's Zoo in San Francisco, cleaning pens & preparing food tubs. I also did some volunteer work at the California Marine Mammal Center caring for and rehabilitatiing elephant seals and California sea lions.
"Mostly I helped animals (wild and domestic) at a distance in the form of financial contributions. I am happy to be of more immediate, hands-on help through my membership in BAM."
September Smith is thrilled to be involved with B.A.M., because she has always had a passion for animals. Growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada, then later in Hurricane, Utah, she always had at least one animal companion — be it a bunny, turtle, miniature horse, pot-bellied pig, cat, or dog — and there were many others.
She decided on a change in scenery after graduating locally, and attended the University of Maryland, College Park. Even during a study-abroad stint in Belgium, animals were able to make her feel at home when she treated horses to sugar cubes and cuddled with local dogs.
After achieving a BA in Anthropology, she worked at the University's business school until her parents asked her to return to run the family business. Now back home in Hurricane, she lives with her three dogs, and is more dedicated to animals than ever.
